Steve's Story

OWEN
It's been a year since I started training with Simon at 6.00am. I first started to try to lose weight and become more active because after years of teaching and working in a job that involves lots of desk time I'd gained a lot of weight.
When I was young I used to be very active, playing rugby, swimming, cycling and doing martial arts but recently I'd started to become aware that my weight gain was a problem. Before I came to see Simon I started doing Aikido three times a week but it wasn't having the same effect it used to when I was young.
After the summer holiday I decided I needed to do something different, but I wasn't sure what. I made an appointment to see a big gym near me and in the meantime I saw an ad for SJT Fitness, so I gave Simon a call and chatted about what I wanted.
He told me to still go and see the big gym and see what I thought then call him afterwards.
When I got to the big gym I found it a very noisy place full of very young people.
I went back to see Simon and felt much more comfortable. He showed me his gym and I liked the idea of one-to-one training so decided to give it a go.
First Simon carried out a fitness assessment and, as I already knew, I was quite out of shape but, I started going to those sessions twice a week and along the way Simon helped me with other parts of my lifestyle like eating healthier and tips to cut the size of my food portions.
I would never have made the changes to my life and kept to them had I chosen to go to that big gym. I think Simon's approach of gradually changing my thoughts on food and exerice, combined with analysing when and where things weren't working has achieved fantastic results that are still ongoing.

For me, the decision to train with Simon was about me feeling better rather than losing weight or any other motivation.
Due to severe anxiety I can't train in big gyms and with a sedentary job I needed something to help.
Simon's encouragement and his belief that I can do it helps me more than anything I've ever done before.
I feel happier and the sessions help me believe in myself, my ability and strangely are helping me control my anxiety, which is an unexpected advantage.

I came to Simon to help me improve my fitness and strength over a four week period. And with Simon's great advice, useful tips and encouragement I managed to improve 30% on my 3 rep squat, 15% on my 3 rep deadlift, 3cm on my vertical jump, max pull up from 3 to 8, max press up from 20 to 34 and sit up from 41 to 50 in 2 minutes. Plus, 10 seconds off my 500 metre row.

I compete in Kettlebell sports and train at the gym alongside running three times a week. However, when it comes to eating and dieting I'm not as strict as I should be so I can compete at specific weight categories for Kettlebell sports.
Simon helped me with a nutrition plan so I could lose weight leading up to competitions, which set out:
- the weight I started at and what I needed to lose
- foods I need to avoid
- help with portion sizing
- my calories per day intake
- what training I needed to do each day
- days that should be rest days and how my food intake needs to be adjusted for each type of day
The plan layout was simple and clear with all the information I needed to get on track so I can compete.
