How To Motivate Yourself to Start Training

Updated: Nov 16, 2019

Simply...

All you nee

d to do is turn up.

But this can be hard in itself

Clients regularly tell me they've tried going to the gym but have found they don't train with the same intensity as when they're with me.

There's a number of reasons for this and certainly having someone timing rest periods and not having your mobile and other distractions claiming your time all help.

But, having someone who has planned your training meticulously and is there keeping you accountable is often the missing piece.

- Which is great when you're here, but what about getting here in the first place?

This is often another difficulty for people but booking the appointment in your diary massively increases the likelihood of you showing up.

And, it's not just me who says so, repeated studies have show that the act of telling someone you 'will' do something at a particular time increases the likelihood of it happening and of you repeating the behaviour. Then, before you know it, you've developed a new habit.

As part of my routine, I check in on my clients to make sure they're still coming and I call them out in order to keep them on track. Alongside this, the structure of paying monthly helps them as having a financial commitment to do something is a great motivator.

All the training plans I create are based on movement patterns including things like - squat, deadlift (hip hinge) lunge, push, pull, and building a strong core. And, by increasing the amount of work we do weekly or bi-weekly means it's not long before clients feel stronger, fitter and healthier.

Plus, if they combine this with habit based eating, helps to get the results they want and more importantly keep getting the results they want long into the future.

So, in summary make motivating yourself easy by making that appointment, share your decision to change your habits, fit your new training routine into your existing life to make it easy to stick to it, think of the end goal and use the small results you get each week to motivate you on each time.
